What's nice in this day and age is Children's variety. Going back about 10-15 or more years ago (basically when we were kids), it was only ever common for a person to support one team – usually this was a family thing too; if your family supported Liverpool you had to support Liverpool. If your family supported Blackpool; you had no choice and had to support Blackpool too.
The only kits children would predominantly get would be the team that they support and the national team’s kits. I for one can vouch for that, as before I made the massive mistake of supporting Arsenal (don’t judge me I know, such a wrong move) I supported Liverpool (I have been asking myself why I changed teams for the past 5 years) – and the only football kits I would have were the Liverpool kits and the England Kits.
However as the years have gone on free will, freedom of speech and choice have become more and more popular nowadays, so yes we have the team that we support and we have their kits, but if we like a particular teams kit that we don’t support we just simply like the kits then its more of the norm now to get that kit. So the way kits look is such a big factor, and if we “love or like” the way a kit looks we will get that kit. Like I think you would all agree with me at this moment in time the nicest looking kit is the Ajax third kit. After looking at a couple of polls, some kits that have been voted the nicest looking have been; Man United Away kit, Juventus away kit, Arsenal third Kit, PSG away kit and the Nigeria Kits.
Role models in players are another influence in us to buying teams kits. We see this on a weekly in our work place which is fantastic it really is. At the moment the likes of Mbappe, Haaland, Neymar & Lewandoski etc are the players children are looking up to, these players are our “Messi & Ronaldo”, and so pretty much 90% of kids nowadays will get those kits because they love those players and look up to those players.
Social media is another big influence in getting particular team’s tops/ kits and liking other teams, as now more than ever the rise in social media gives football fans the perfect opportunity to keep in a constant loop and feel closer to their favourite players and teams. Platforms for football teams like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and even Facebook are now gaining more and more fans, as these platforms are providing more content and giving fans access to content provided. So whilst scrolling through social media we can view all players behind the scenes videos and clips, backstage clips of training sessions, but then also snippets of games and best bits. This can then lead to us liking certain teams and players which can ultimately lead us to buying shirts etc.
And finally tv coverage of football at the moment is superb. We can now see not only all the premier league games, but championship, Scottish prem games to most La Liga games, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga, not forgetting all champions league games, Europa league games and Europa conference league games. So we are exposed to more football games and football teams, which can lead to us liking teams as well as supporting our main team. I for one can vouch for this and support the main claim in this blog as I love watching football (literally can just sit and watch any game of football), and I really enjoy watching how certain teams play so I like multiple teams (yes I may add that I do still like Liverpool haha), whilst still supporting the mighty arsenal!!
